Smart but crazy people, these.

We could develop a Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington. The terror campaign could be pointed at Cuban refugees seeking haven in the United States. We could sink a boatload of Cubans enroute to Florida (real or simulated). We could foster attempts on lives of Cuban refugees in the United States even to the extent of wounding in instances to be widely publicized. Exploding a few plastic bombs in carefully chosen spots, the arrest of Cuban agents and the release of prepared documents substantiating Cuban involvement also would be helpful in projecting the idea of an irresponsible government.

"Bank of America. We'll help you out."

A Bank of America lobbyist tells presidential candidate Rick Perry that he has their support.

I wonder what Perry will have to do in return.

When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and waving a cross (or words to that effect)

The quote "When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and waving a cross." has been attributed to both Huey Long, a populist Louisiana politician assassinated in 1935,1 and Sinclair Lewis, the first American to win the Nobel Prize in literature.2

It was actually a professor Halford E. Luccock of Yale Divinity School who gave origin to the quote in a New York Times article published 12 September, 1938.

Below is a re-print of the article (1938-09-12):

DISGUISED FASCISM SEEN AS A MENACE

Prof. Luccock Warns That It Will Bear the Misleading Label 'Americanism'

When and if fascism comes to America it will not be labeled "made in Germany"; it will not be marked with a swastika; it will not even be called fascism; it will be called, of course, "Americanism," Professor Halford E. Luccock of the Divinity School of Yale University said yesterday morning in a sermon at the Riverside Church, Riverside Drive and 122d Street.
"The high-sounding phrase 'the American way' will be used by interested groups, intent on profit, to cover a multitude of sins against the American and Christian tradition, such sins as lawless violence, tear gas and shotguns, denial of civil liberties," he said. "There is an obligation resting on us all to dedicate our minds to the hard task of thinking in terms of Christian objectives and values, so that we may be saved from moral confusion.
"For never, probably, has there been a time when there was a more vigorous effort to surround social and international questions with such a fog of distortion and prejudice and hysterical appeal to fear. We have touched a new low in a Congressional investigation this Summer, used by some participating in it to whip up fear and prejudice against many causes of human welfare, such as a concern for peace and the rights of labor to bargain collectively."
Professor Luccock, who preached on the theme "Keeping Life Out of the Confusion," continued:
"There is, of course, the peace of the cemetery. If you want that you can have it. But you will pay for such complacent serenity with blind eyes which do not see the world's fear and agony; with deaf ears, into which the still sad music of humanity never comes; with deadened nerves and unsensitized conscience.
"We will never be brought to confusion, even in such a baffling and muddled world as ours, if we have a faith in a God of love as the ultimate power in the universe. The words 'God is love' have this deep meaning: that everything that is against love is ultimately doomed and damned."

My thoughts on Texas governor and presidential hopeful Rick Perry

When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and waving a cross.
- Author unknown

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ (23) Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Pursuit of happiness, not the pursuit of profits

Borders Bookstores closed all of its stores some months ago. It seems recent that I heard about it on the news. There was a Borders store in downtown San Francisco, in Union Square. That's gone. I remember one we as a family happened to go to every now and then, and read books and later eat outside inside a food court. Now that's gone too.

I understand the reason why Borders closed. It's because they could not be sustainable in the face of more efficient money-making machines such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Borders could not compete anymore and had to close its doors.

Even knowing why things happened as they did, it still saddens me that I can no longer go to those places as I remember them because now I will have to see something different: a cold, uncaring reality. The warmth that I had, empty, taken from me by an invisible hand we all have no problem with.

At least one can see God's hand in nature when he makes an appearance at a concert.

En paz

por Amado Nervo

Muy cerca de mi ocaso, yo te bendigo, vida,

porque nunca me diste ni esperanza fallida,

ni trabajos injustos, ni pena inmerecida;

porque veo al final de mi rudo camino

que yo fui el arquitecto de mi propio destino;

que si extraje la miel o la hiel de las cosas,

fue porque en ellas puse hiel o mieles sabrosas:

cuando planté rosales, coseché siempre rosas.

...Cierto, a mis lozanías va a seguir el invierno:

¡mas tú no me dijiste que mayo fuese eterno!

Hallé sin duda largas noches de mis penas;

mas no me prometiste tú sólo noches buenas;

y en cambio tuve algunas santamente serenas...

Amé, fui amado, el sol acarició mi faz.

¡Vida, nada me debes! ¡Vida, estamos en paz!

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing (or words to that effect)

This quote is bogus, and [it's supposed author William] Burke never said it. It is a pseudo-quote, and corresponds to real quotes in the same way that urban legends about the ghost hitch-hiker vanishing in the back of the car and alligators in the sewers correspond to true news stories.
A good read. (Note: Thorough, academic and rigorous.)

Times like these / Tiempos como estos

When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.

London Calling

by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones

London calling to the faraway towns

Now war is declared, and battle come down

London calling to the underworld

Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls

London calling, now don't look to us

Phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust

London calling, see we ain't got no swing

'Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in

Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin

Engines stop running, but I have no fear

'Cause London is drowning, and I live by the river

London calling to the imitation zone

Forget it, brother, you can go it alone

London calling to the zombies of death

Quit holding out, and draw another breath

London calling, and I don't wanna shout

But while we were talking, I saw you nodding out

London calling, see we ain't got no high

Except for that one with the yellowy eyes

The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in

Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin

A nuclear error, but I have no fear

'Cause London is drowning, and I live by the river

Now get this

London calling, yes, I was there, too

An' you know what they said? Well, some of it was true!

London calling at the top of the dial

After all this, won't you give me a smile?

London calling

I never felt so much alike

Sleep Now in the Fire

by Zack de la Rocha

The world is my expense
The cost of my desire
Jesus blessed me with its future
And I protect it with fire
So raise your fists
And march around
Just don't take what you need
I'll jail and bury those committed
And smother the rest in greed
Crawl with me into tomorrow
Or I'll drag you to your grave
I'm deep inside your children
They'll betray you in my name

Hey, hey
Sleep now in the fire

Hey, hey
Sleep now in the fire

The lie is my expense
The scope of my desire
The party blessed me with its future
And I protect it with fire
I am the Nina The Pinta The Santa Maria
The noose and the rapist
The fields overseer
The agent of orange
The priests of Hiroshima
The cost of my desire
Sleep now in the fire

Hey, hey
Sleep now in the fire

Hey, hey
Sleep now in the fire

For it's the end of history
It's caged and frozen still
There is no other pill to take
So swallow the one
That made you ill
The Nina The Pinta The Santa Maria
The noose and the rapist
The fields overseer
The agent of orange
The priests of Hiroshima
The cost of my desire
To Sleep now in the fire
